Approximate 5sp rear axle weight?
« on: March 30, 2016, 12:06:57 PM »
OK guys,

here's one of those things we ask ourselves now and then:

What's the weight of X?

In this case it's the 5-sp rear axle (not the Banjo-type 4-sp)...

I had to lift the axle to move it out of the way for further work in the

Man Cave and decided to raise it and store it vertically (lashed to

the west steel pillar).  And why not lift it with my SALTER scales in-

between the axle and the hook and get the nice-to-know figure of

its (empty) weight at the same time?

Well, this is it - store it for future reference: Empty it is 71.5 kg

158lbs

(with a Quaife center and the hand brake cable)

71.5 kg, interesting. About exactly what I weigh, wow, much more than I would

have guessed!

Funny too because I think the 5 speed gearbox is MUCH heavier, I move rear

axles around all the time and they don't SEEM that heavy, perhaps because

they're easier to get to and support?

I have a rear axle out with a stock set of inner gears, wonder if the Quaife

adds any weight to stock. I'll try to weigh it tonight.

Thanks for the tidbit,
