Wedgelist List Resurgence

Having been on this list since '98 i get a bit sad when it seems to go silent

wondering if it has reached its end.  This list is a dinosaur in the age of

owned  website forums.  It remains an amazing resource for information that

hits your inbox at request.  So fast.  So easy.  There is nothing wrong with

website forums, they are a fun and incredible resource.  But this list that

exists solely on the effort of the participants is uniquely quick and

powerful.  I wonder how many other enthusiast lists like this still exist.

Bill,  this list was started by TR8 EFI Ownerbs looking for help in

maintaining the EFI system and  now is probably one of the oldest of itbs

kind,  30 years old at least.  It may well be one of only a handful of lists

that can hold claim to predating the World Wide Web and even the Internet as

we know it today.  Back when you needed to be connected to an educational or

military research  facility to gain access at network speeds.  I know my first

posts were written and viewed using a Unix text based  command line system

over a ISP modem connection.  Those were the days.

The e-Mail interface presents a very low barrier to access and utilizes a tool

with a high adoption rate.  Everyone has access to and knows how to use it.

Only feature I think most people miss these days is the ability to attach

pictures, which the list  used to support in the early days, but which was

removed I think due to the high cost of bandwidth back them.

But if is well to remember that It exists through the generosity of others. At

30 years old it is reasonable to expect that those who host us may retire soon

if they havenbt already.   I wonder if there is a succession plan or if one

day webll just be told times up.

It will be a sad day indeed when our little back water corner of the internet

finally comes to an end.

About 7-8 years ago some of us tried motivating the list and itbs members to

move the content and discussion over to thebritishcar.com where there are

forums set up to host specific wedge talk.  We tried this as when people buy

new sports car today they first research them on the forums, which leads to

education and excitement, and typically conversion to said car ownership.

This list has unbelievable knowledge and stored content, however it is not

easily accessed nor found, so a lot of people miss out. It is sad to think

that because of this we will have people leaving the list at a far more rapid

pace then joining it, and youbre right eventually it will fade out.

Therebs still time to save it, but it seems like most people prefer the list

digest format and are unwilling to change, so letbs just enjoy the list

while it lasts.

My first post in 94 generated a response from Jim Tencate educating me, a web newbie, to the etiquette of not using all caps in a post.  At that time I had  my TR7 Coupe for 5 years and was just starting mods beyond the V6 swap.  I continued to develop that car till 2009 when I sold it to Clint Cooper and it went on under his vision to become the TR7 Turbo V8.  I have mostly lurked since then but continue to enjoy the interaction and the activities of names I recognize.

Keep the faith.

The neatest part about it is it is free.  No one controls the content or who

can join via a credit card.

When i first joined it was a hotbed of high performance tech, advice, theory

etc.  and it just popped up on the email.  Fantastic.  Going forward i will

recruit new members at every event i attend.  Unfortunately that is not too

many at this stage of family life.
