Title: TR7 / TR8 steering racks interchangeable?
Post by: impster@maine.rr.com on January 23, 2019, 06:33:37 AM
I'm giving serious consideration to modifying my 8 to electric power

steering, using a Toyota 3 wire unit. Not wanting to modify my original

power steering rack, I'd instead like to install a TR7 manual rack. Does it

bolt directly to the TR8 subframe or are modifications required?

Yes

Both my 8bs were converted to 7 racks.

Both had tedbs needle bearing kits for struts.

The steering coupler is longer on the 7 and were changed.

Sure but the turns ratio is different.B  The TR7 rack is four turns

lock-to-lock vs the three for the TR8 power assisted rack.

There are at least two versions of the 7 rack for ratios.

One is quicker. Closer to what the 8 rack ratio.

I have one of each.

Anyone have a photo of a verified early fast ratio rack to send me?B  I

may have one, but I don't know.B  It looks significantly different.B  I

have heard also the inner pivot distance is different & the early rack

causes some bump steer.B  Again more hearsay.

There are some racers on this list that may be able to answer

definitively.B  Todd K?

As far as I know, there is very little difference between the early and later

racks.  Some have zirc fittings some donbt.  There might be a slight

difference in appearance, but dimensions are the same.  I just went and

checked my stash.  Down to just 4 TR7 racks, and all four are 3.8-3.9 or so

turns lock to lock, making them early racks.  The later ones are 4.7 or

something like that.  I prefer the 3.8-3.9 early racks in my TR8s.  Probably a

big reason why there are 5 TR8 racks down there.  The early racks are hard to

come by because there arenbt a lot of TR7 coupe parts cars left out there.

Ibve sold off all of my later racks, mostly to TR3 guys doing manual

steering conversions.  Have a couple of parts cars, that I have not had a

chance to tear apart yet.  They should both have later racks, but there is a

chance the early 77 coupe I have has an early rack.  Donbt know when they

switched ratios, but I always thought it was early in the 76 model year.
