With the steering column removed, what is the proper direction from which to

install the Polly bush in the fire wall?

Consider for a moment that this bush serves three purposed, i.e. as a

rotational bearing surface for the steering mast; as a thrust bearing for the

clamp-adjusting, tube to upper column, (122669, Rimmer); and as a thrust

bearing for the compliance spring/thrust washer (UKC5508, Rimmer) and washer,

plain (WA600121, Rimmer) assembly, which fits on the steering mast, engine

side of fire wall.



As my steering column has been removed in total and renovated, and with no

help from the ROM, I am asking myself which way is the proper installation of

the bush? Rimmer, depicts installation from the engine side, which is the only

possible way without removing the steering mast. But I think that it should be

installed from the cockpit side, i.e. with the larger button head bearing

surface on the inside, as perhaps was done by the factory



Consider for a moment that the steering mast is always loaded down towards the

engine, either by the compliance wave spring assembly, or by the downward

force of the drivers hands, holding/pushing down on the steering wheel. So

why not install the bush with the large flanged button head from the cockpit

side where it can best resist these lateral forces?



OK, perhaps a very moot point, and only of consideration if you have

everything apart as I do. Thus, this I will now do, and during final assembly

I will adjust the upper column clamp (UKC2323, Rimmer) and the clamp-adjusting

(122669, Rimmer) to allow a bit of lateral float via the compliance (wave)

spring washer assembly.



Please, your thoughts on this assembly procedure and how might I improve it?

I installed mine from inside the passenger compartment.  I used some all

thread, large washers and a metal cup in the engine compartment.

I believe there was a diy article about steering bushing installation in a past issue of the TWOA newsletter.  If you're a member you can download past issues from the web site.  If you're not a member, you should be...  :-)

If the factory installed these from the cockpit side, the large head would end

up in the cockpitb or still on the steering column, which it never does.

Instead, it wears away to nothing from rubbing against the wavy washer and

disappears.B
