Gentlemen,

Do you have part numbers for these (usable) water pumps?

Vary depending on A/C or not?

I attached an aluminum plate to the front (radiator) side of the flange with a

hole drilled in the center to fit over the water pump shaft. B I made a 3/8

(three eighths) thick spacer that fit inside the large center hole of the

pulley. B I drilled four holes through the plate and spacer to attach the

assembly to the water pump flange. B I've attached some pictures for Mark, I

know they will be stripped for the list.B

Do you have any idea how thick that plate is?

Wedge List / TR8 For Sale
« Last post by "Chris Cavanaugh" on November 17, 2017, 05:01:16 PM »
Hello Listers,

I'm in Houston and have a 1980 TR8 for sale.  85,000 miles.  Recent work

includes repaint and all new interior (Platinum exterior, Navy interior

carpets and seats in leather), new carburetor and many miscellaneous items

(gaskets, fittings, etc.. after repaint).  New minilite style wheels and

tires.  NO A/C.  Car was originally in Massachusetts and was worked on at

some point by Woody, but not in an aggressive way.  Car shows no signs of

rust around the wheel arches, but there are a few areas in the pans that are

repaired (appear to be related to top down corrosion versus road salt

corrosion).  Does drip some oil and does makes some noise when releasing the

clutch, which might be a throw-out bearing.  Clutch otherwise is fine.

Decent top and newly installed navy blue cloth tonneau cover.  Car runs and

drives well.  Moving on to new project.  $10k/reasonable offers.  Would like

the car to go to an enthusiast.  Pictures and more details available.

Information is also on the Wedge Shop For Sale link, Craigslist Houston and

VTR.

More information/pictures send e-mail to chriscav@sbcglobal.net, or call:

Thanks!

Chris

Yes, more like 4 or five different lengths if you go back to the 60's,   but

only maybe 2 that need to be considered for this topic.

and  for earlier models,  the A/C also may determine where the intake points.

Forget which one,  but the wrong choice appears to locate the rad hose into

the middle of the alternator.

My research indicates that the later models may have standardized on the lower

inlet that routes the hose under the alternator and should work for the TR8.

Definitely a case for bringing  the old pump with you to the parts store.

There are also at least 2 different length GM water pumps depending on

with or without A/C. Ted

BINGO!!!!

you confirmed what I was thinking exactly.

One of my ideas was the ability to throw the adapter in the tool box so I

would have options on road trips.

Do you have any idea how thick that plate is?

A piece of 100# or greater monofilament fishing line, with a loop on

the latch post where the regular pull wire is attached, threaded

through a vent hole in the firewall to the left of the steering

column tied to a handle will provide emergency relief .

I have a Buick water pump on my TR8 engine. B Back in 2007 I wrote this:

"Several years back I replaced my water pump with a new mid 80's Buick

(Electra?) pump.B  I needed to make a spacer for the pulley to align properly

(used some aluminum plate).B  Now, if I am travelling and the pump needs

replacement, I can use the Buick pump or a TR8 pump, whichever is more readily

available at that place and time."

It's obviously been a long time since I did this, so I don't remember the

details, only that it didn't seem difficult. B Your comment about the 3 bolts

vs 4 bolts made me curious, so I took a look at the pulley. B The pulley

mounting flange on the water pump is smaller in diameter than the B bolt

circle on the TR8 pulley. B I have 4 bolts holding a plate to the mounting

flange and 3 bolts with nuts holding the pulley to the plate. B I didn't have

a mill nor a lathe when I did this, so ordinary tools should suffice.

I haven't tried it,  but there was some discussion many moons ago about using

a screwdriver to pry the latch open from up top.  As I recall some models have

an access hole in the bonnet grill that can be used to provide access.  As the

thinking goes,  the rubber seal above the latch can be pushed aside.

I don't like the chances of doing it without messing  up the paint, but if

all also fails....

Maybe practice with the bonnet open.....before you need to do it for real...
