Other Vehicles: All Rover V8s, built after the TR8 went into production.

Comments:

Be sure to match the appropriate gasket in order to maintain a similar compression ratio. i.e. composite or metal shim.

Earlier pre Rover SD1/TR8 heads have smaller valves and may not be ready for unleaded petrol.

Later (1994 +) 4.0L heads are skimmed with smaller combustion chambers and 10 head bolts to compensate for the much thicker composite gaskets.

Other Part #s:

Other Vehicles: 1961-63 Buick 215, like in a skylark or any Rover V8.

Comments:

Early Rovers use thinner metal gasket. The later 4.0L used a thicker composite gasket that was compensated for by skimming the mounting face resulting in smaller combustion chambers. They also only had 10 head bolts.

The Rover 4.0L has very thick composite head gaskets, the TR8 head gaskets are in the middle and the thinnest are the steel shim gaskets available from D&D (note: they use a sealer unlike the composite gaskets).

Rover also sells a 3.5L composite gasket designed for the early heads which is slightly thinner than their later 4.0L composites, but still looses compression ratio to the original steel shim gaskets.

Comments:

The stock gasket (top picture) was a single port design (8 required). The later replacement gasket (bottom picture) covers two ports (4 required) and is easier to align when refitting the manifolds.

I've been using Land Rover part# ERR6733. They have been working well for me on the cast iron manifolds.

Repair: To repair the oil seal surface on the Harmonic Balancer. The TR7/Stag has a 1.883" shaft or thereabouts, and that 88179 sleeve ain't gonna fit. What you actually need is a 99189 for this application. It's a little loose, but you use a sleeve retaining adhesive (like Permatex/Loctite green sleeve retainer) to keep it in place

Repair: To repair the oil seal surface on the TR8s Harmonic Balancer The front one is 99192. It was a little narrow so I had to position it properly. I couldn't find one to cover the full length of the shaft but that one worked fine. It fits 1.909" - 1.915". It's been awhile since I bought one

Joe Worsley

This is what I used: SKF 99192 Speedi Sleeve, SSLEEVE Style, Inch, 1.912in Shaft Diameter, 0.375in Width

To repair the oil seal surface on the rear of the TR8 crankshaft - I also used a speedi-sleeve part # 99326 for the rear crankshaft seal on the TR8. The sleeve is .813" long and fits 3.247 - 3.2253 diameter shafts. I paid $28.76 back in 2001

Joe Worsley

I had picked out the 99850 from the SKF catalog. Its the same diameter (as 99326) but a little narrower. Its always good to know what someone else has used and that it worked. RockAuto has them for about $35 so not too much inflation in 12 years.

Later engines, 4 and 4.6 litre, were fitted with neoprene from factory. They will fit a early engine too, I ran them on mine before fitting SBC covers (with the nec. adaptor plates) before that ' back in the day ' ran neoprene Felpro gaskets.
